Scotch Whisky Nosing & Tasting Glasses

We are often asked to recommend nosing and tasting glasses for scotch whisky.

Four different types of whisky glass are depicted in the picture below. They can be described from left to right as ;

  • Scotch whisky “tot” glass
  • Scotch whisky contemporary “nosing and tasting” glass
  • Scotch whisky “firing” glass
  • Scotch whisky “traditional tumbler”

For the purposes of “nosing and tasting” the contemporary “nosing and tasting glass” is recommended. The contemporary whisky glass is the result of years of consultation with the Scotch Whisky industry. It was specially designed by a glassware expert with the help of Master Blenders from a number of Scotch Whisky distilleries to form what the supplier claims is the “perfect Scotch Whisky glass!” This glass design is supplied to every distillery in Scotland and Ireland as well as every major whisky festival around the world.

The whisky “tot” glass is ideal for sampling a small “shot” of whisky (it is sometimes also termed a “shot glass”) and can be found in both round and square form. It is also traditionally part of a “night cap” set.” The “firing” glass is also preferred by some, is very aesthetically pleasing and its shape brings to mind the traditional scotch “thistle.” The “traditional tumbler” design takes the form of a more standard tumbler and is more commonly used if ice or a mixer is to be added to the scotch whisky.
