The Scotch Whisky Aroma Nosing Kit

How to “Nose and Taste” Scotch Whisky

The sense of smell is one of the most sophisticated of all the senses, and the pleasure that can be gained from “nosing and tasting” the many wonderful and varied scotch whiskies available today is an experience that should be treasured. This is particularly true if it is experienced in a convivial atmosphere with a group of friends – old or new.

When we “Nose” a Scotch Whisky and attempt to identify and describe a particular aroma, quite often the problem that we are faced with is the “word” problem. How often have you recognised a particular aroma yet you cannot quite “put your finger” on the word that describes it! One of the key steps in the process that we describe in the Nosing guide booklet is the issue of “Nosing Vocabulary” which we explore in conjunction with our series of selected “Reference Aromas.” We recommend a method to “Train your Nose” against our series of standard “Reference Aromas” and then, using our framework of “standard” or “reference” vocabulary we encourage you to develop your own “Personal Nosing Vocabulary.” We guide you to help not only identify our reference set of aromas but also to identify the particular aromas to which your nose may be more or less sensitive. We then recommend a “Nosing” and “Tasting” process to not only “educate your nose” but to help you gain maximum enjoyment from savouring your favourite Single Malt or Blended Scotch Whisky.
